Follow the valuable tips we give here in this post and don’t make a mistake when choosing the right water pump.
First of all, choosing the right pump for a project is a very important step in ensuring the success of the installation. Since the pump is the heart of many hydraulic systems, not choosing the right pump can lead to problems ranging from poor performance to premature failure and high maintenance costs.
Why is choosing the right water pump so important?
First of all, choosing the right pump is essential to ensure:
- Optimized performance: A well-sized motor pump ensures adequate water flow, the necessary pressure and the desired energy efficiency for the application.
- Longer service life: Correct selection prevents premature wear of the pump, increasing its service life and reducing the need for repairs.
- Cost reduction: An efficient pump reduces energy consumption and maintenance costs over time.
- Problem prevention: Incorrect selection can lead to problems such as cavitation, vibration, overheating and premature failures, compromising system reliability.
In conclusion, you can't go wrong when selecting the pump for a certain application, do you agree?
What to consider when choosing a water pump?
In this sense, to choose the right motor pump, it is essential to consider the following factors:
- Type of fluid: The nature of the fluid to be pumped (clean water, dirty water, chemicals, etc.) undoubtedly influences the choice of pump material and seal type.
- Flow rate: The amount of liquid to be pumped per unit of time certainly determines the capacity of the motor pump.
- Manometric head: The vertical distance that the liquid needs to be raised, and the pressure losses in the system define the required manometric head.
- Operating conditions: Liquid temperature, suction pressure, presence of suspended solids, and other operating conditions must also be considered.
- Material of construction: The pump material must be compatible with the fluid to be pumped and the corrosive conditions of the environment.
- Drive type: The motor pump can be driven by an electric motor, combustion engine or other type of engine, depending on the application.
- Characteristic curve: The characteristic curve of the motor pump relates the flow rate to the manometric height and is essential for selecting the ideal operating point.
The consequences of an incorrect choice
In other words, not choosing the right water pump can cause a series of problems, such as:
- Poor performance, i.e. the wrong pump may not be able to provide the flow and pressure required for the application.
- Premature wear, i.e. an inadequate pump may suffer excessive wear due to inadequate operating conditions.
- Increased energy consumption, in other words, an undersized or oversized pump may consume more energy than necessary.
- Frequent failures: An incorrect pump can frequently fail, compromising the continuity of the process.
- High maintenance costs: Without the right equipment, frequent repairs will be needed, increasing maintenance costs over time.
Who is the FAMAC Dimensioner for?
We developed the FAMAC Dimensioning Tool with the purpose of making life easier for construction professionals, engineers, designers and others involved in projects involving hydraulic pumps. Furthermore, this free online tool helps in selecting the ideal pump for each application, considering several parameters and offering a customized solution.
FAMAC dimensioning machine: your complete solution
The FAMAC Sizing System works in a simple and intuitive way. Therefore, simply enter your application data, such as flow rate, head, liquid type and other relevant information, and the system will indicate the most suitable pump models.
By choosing the “Selection by Operating Point” module, the user will basically need to fill in the flow rate and the manometric height of the application. There are additional filters that are not mandatory to fill in, as they appear minimized. However, if the data is known, it is worth filling them in! This way, the system filters the options even further and informs the best motor pump options according to these specifications.
In “Sizing by Application”, the user will have a more complete and precise experience, since this module allows the hydraulic system to be sized according to the data provided for the installation and the selected segment. Initially, the user will indicate in which segment the motor pump will be used. Next, he/she must select one of the application options. Then, the system opens a new window, in which it requests the system data. Thus, based on what was provided, the system calculates the NPSH required by the installation, sizes the hydraulic system and selects which FAMAC models can meet the information provided.
Finally, anyone who wants to consult technical information or compare more products using hydraulic performance curves should use the “Query by Product” module. To do so, simply enter the model name or product code and the system will display the hydraulic performance curve(s) of the associated model(s).
Performance Curves
As a result, after choosing the desired model from the options presented, clicking on one of the lines in the table that appears on the right or even on one of the curves that appear in the graph on the left, a new screen will open, in which all the details of the product appear.
At the center are the hydraulic performance curves, which relate flow to height, NPSH, shaft power and pump performance. Just use the scroll bar to see each of these graphs on the screen.
On the left, it is possible to access another range of relevant information: the photo and the characteristics of the product, the dimensional drawings, the hydraulic table, the exploded view, the connection diagram, the product manual, the guidelines on wiring and the list with all components of the motor pump structure.
Finally, the FAMAC Dimensioner allows printing and sharing of technical information and proposal files, including equipment characteristics, performance data of the selected model and related graphs, as well as exclusive links to access various other information relevant to the product.
What's new in the latest version of the FAMAC Dimensioner
A very interesting new feature in this new version of the FAMAC Dimensioner is the restriction (“X”) and warning (“!”) indicators. Both are important warnings that indicate pump models that may meet the design requirements, but do not satisfactorily meet all the needs of the application itself (for example, cavitation) or whose installation conditions are not technically compatible or ideal (for example, the point is very far from the ideal performance). To access the explanations associated with the warnings and restrictions, simply click on the respective symbol and a list of explanatory messages will open.
We have also included an “Advanced Presentation” button for those who want or need more detailed data on item performance. This button provides access to a very complete table with advanced calculation results. The numerical values provided allow you to compare all selected models that meet the design requirements.
The latest version of the FAMAC Dimensioner also brings other new features:
- Intuitive interface: Easier and more intuitive navigation.
- More application options: Expansion of application options, covering a greater number of projects.
- More accurate results: Improved calculation algorithms for more accurate results.
- More complete reports: Customized reports with more information and graphs.
Several Features in a Single Tool
The FAMAC Sizing Tool is the ideal tool for those looking to optimize their projects and ensure the selection of the most suitable pump. With its intuitive interface and complete functionalities, it facilitates the selection process and ensures the choice of the most efficient and economical solution.
