Tragedies Can Be Avoided

Efficient fire suppression systems can prevent tragedies. Here's everything you can (and should!) know about this important set of equipment.

Fires are devastating events that can transform lives in a matter of minutes. When they occur in places with a high concentration of people or valuable assets, the consequences can undoubtedly be irreparable. Tragedies can be avoided, especially with the adoption of adequate and well-designed fire prevention and fighting systems.

Serious ConsequencesBrazilian Cases

In Brazil, the Kiss nightclub fire in 2013 is a painful example of how failures in safety measures can cost lives. In a few minutes, the fire, caused by a flare used inside the venue (inappropriate for such a purpose), consumed the nightclub in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. Furthermore, with blocked emergency exits and a lack of a fire suppression system adequate for the size of the venue and the estimated number of people, the disaster resulted in 242 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Equally unfortunate, another example was the fire at the National Museum of Brazil in 2018, in Rio de Janeiro, which destroyed most of the historical collection, including more than 20 million items, some of which are priceless to the history of humanity. Although the museum had fire safety systems, these were insufficient to prevent the tragedy. The museum was located in an old building, and experts investigating the case pointed to the lack of sprinkler systems and other fire-fighting equipment as one of the factors that contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. In other words, the tragedy highlighted the importance of adequate fire-fighting systems, especially in historical buildings, and the need to keep these systems updated and functional to prevent irreparable losses.

And it's not just in Brazil.

Similar problems also occur in other countries. This was the case with the Grenfell Tower fire in London in June 2017. Causing the death of 72 people, it was one of the most devastating fires in modern British history. Investigations pointed to a lack of maintenance, non-compliance with safety standards, and poorly designed fire prevention systems as the causes of the tragedy.

Conversely, the unfortunate outcome led to a significant revision of fire safety standards for buildings in the United Kingdom.

In short, these examples remind us that the difference between a tragedy and a controlled incident lies in well-planned and functional fire suppression systems.

This post discusses the main types of motor pumps used in these systems and shows how they can be the difference between safety and disaster, and above all, how major tragedies related to building fires can be avoided.

What Causes Fires?

Fires can be caused by:

  • Combustible or flammable materials;
  • Electrical faults;
  • Sabotage or criminal acts;
  • Misuse of equipment.

Regardless of the cause, prevention is vital, especially in places with high traffic, as well as in those where material or immaterial losses are significant or even irreparable.

Motor pumps: A key component in firefighting.

Therefore, we can state that pumping systems play a central role in fire fighting, whether in systems that include hydrants and hoses or automatic sprinklers.

These systems typically include three types of motor pumps:

  1. Main Motor Pump: Responsible for providing the necessary flow and pressure for firefighting. It must be connected to an independent electrical power circuit to ensure its operation in any situation.
  2. Auxiliary motor pump: It comes into action if the main pump is insufficient or there is a power outage. It can be powered by a generator or, alternatively, have a combustion engine for emergency situations.
  3. Jockey Motor Pump: It maintains system pressure, preventing unnecessary activation of the main pump. Compact and automatic, it meets small demands and compensates for leaks in the piping.

In addition, an expansion tank and pressure switches can also be part of these systems. The tank helps maintain system pressure, reducing the number of jockey pump starts in case of minor leaks. Pressure switches are pressure switches that activate the motor pumps as needed. Adjustable, they allow the pressure points to be set according to the system's specific requirements.

All of this equipment, especially the motor pumps, are essential components in preventing major tragedies. Therefore, selecting the right product and performing regular maintenance are paramount.

Reliability and Efficiency: A Combination That Saves Lives

In short, to ensure effectiveness in fighting fires, equipment must meet the most stringent manufacturing, inspection, and testing standards.

Beyond Equipment: The Importance of Planning

Above all, anyone who understands the importance of pumping systems for fire fighting will certainly invest in quality equipment. This is paramount. However, this alone is not enough. In addition to the equipment selected to meet the firefighting demand when necessary, a good fire fighting system requires:

  • A detailed action plan to be implemented in case of fire;
  • Clear signage indicating escape routes; and
  • Regular training for staff and occupants.

Prevention is the best solution!

In other words, ensure the safety of your building with reliable systems and high-performance equipment. Fire suppression systems should not be seen as a cost or a requirement for a building to be released for use. They need to be designed seriously, purchased with confidence, and kept ready for use at any time.

Since we still haven't learned to predict the future – although some cases even seem like tragedies waiting to happen, given the lack of importance given to this issue – when it's necessary to fight a fire, what's most essential and what's expected is that the system works properly, isn't it?
